Musical Theatre Scholarship Auditions
MTISA AT FESTIVAL 2027 WILL CONSIST OF THREE ROUNDS OF COMPETITION
Â
Round 1: PRELIMS
Tuesday, Jan 12 from 2pm-6pm. OPEN TO ANYONE. Click here to register by December 14. Please prepare a 90-second cut of any musical theater song. The preliminary round will now take the place of our traditional "self-nomination" track from previous years.Â
Â
Production Nominees: Students who received an MTI nomination for their performance in a musical production at their home institution ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN PRELIMS, and will go directly to Semi-Finals.
Click here to confirm your participation by December 14.
If you do not confirm your participation, you will not be guaranteed a spot in the Semi-Finals.Â
Â
Round 2: SEMI-FINALS
Wednesday, Jan 13 from 10am-2pm. A select group from Prelims will join the production nominees and advance to semi-finals. Please prepare two cuts, not to exceed 3.5 minutes. For those who advance from Prelims, this package can include your 90-second cut, although this is not required.
Â
(Some students who do not advance to Semi-Finals will have an opportunity to perform their audition material at a cabaret event–details to come.)
Â
Students who advance from Semi-Finals will receive a masterclass coaching session before the final round.Â
Â
Round 3: FINALS
Saturday, Jan 16 from 10am-12pm. Finalists will perform ONE FULL SONG (see instructions below).Â
Â

Choosing Your Material:
The sheet music for the material you choose does not have to be submitted ahead of time, but we do ask that you list the titles of songs on the sign-up form. Please adhere to the guidelines below.
Â
PRELIMS: One 90-second cut.
Â
SEMI-FINALS: Two cuts, not to exceed 3.5 minutes (this can include your cut from Prelims, although not required). This time constraint will be enforced.
Â
FINALS: One full song. This can come from one of your selected cuts from Prelims or Semi-Finals, or it can be a new selection, as long as this song is workshopped in the masterclass.
Â

Preparing Your Material:
All material will be performed with piano accompaniment provided by ACTF; those auditioning may not bring their own accompanist.
Â
Students will need to have clean copies of their sheet music clearly marked and double-sided in a three-ring binder. Please ensure that none of the sheet music, including the accompaniment lines, has been cut off due to a crooked or improperly sized photocopy.
Â
Since participants will not know whether they will advance to Semi-Finals until after they arrive at festival, all MTI Scholarship Award participants should bring their prepared sheet music for all of their songs to the festival.

The pieces you choose should be from a published piece written for the musical theatre stage, however we encourage the creative re-imagining of classic repertoire. Questions regarding appropriateness of selections may be directed to the MT Chair, Julia Burke: juliaburke5300@gmail.com
